Attention, skywatchers! A total lunar eclipse will result in a gorgeous red blood moon this Saturday, April 4, but there's a catch: it will only last about five minutes. Astronomers expect the eclipse to begin around 6:16 a.m. EDT and last just under two hours. The dramatic blood moon will be visible at 7:58 a.m. EDT.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is directly between the Moon and the Sun. Earth's atmosphere filters out blue and green light, and the resulting blood moon is only illuminated by dim red light.
Per NASA, this eclipse will be visible in Asia, Oceania, and throughout the Americas; skygazers in Europe and Africa will be left in the dark this time around. It is the third total lunar eclipse in a series of four, known as a tetrad. The final total eclipse of this tetrad will occur on September 28 of this year.
